The biggest risk expats face isn't the IRS.
It's choosing the wrong tax preparer.

Self-preparation tax software often misses foreign reporting requirements like FBAR, Form 8938, and PFIC reporting. Large online firms handle high volumes, which limits review depth.

  • Missed FBAR or Form 8938 filings can lead to $10,000+ penalties per account.

  • Incorrect use of Form 2555 or 1116 can result in double taxation on foreign income.

  • Non-specialized accountants often overlook PFICs, FBAR/FATCA, foreign companies and GILTI rules.

Zisman US Tax vs. Other Options

DIY Tax Software / Non-Specialized Accountants

  • DIY tax software often fails to handle critical expat filings - leading to missed forms, IRS penalties, and unnecessarily higher tax bills.
  • Non-Specialized Accountants often lack expertise in expat reporting - FBAR, FATCA, and PFIC rules are frequently missed, exposing you to significant penalties.

Big Online Firms

  • Standardized processing for thousands of returns
  • Limited individual review of complex situations

Your Expat Tax Questions, Answered

Do I need to file U.S. taxes if I live abroad?

Yes - U.S. citizens and green card holders must file worldwide income regardless of where they live. Our experts help you stay compliant and avoid double taxation.

What is the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555)?

Form 2555 allows qualifying expats to exclude up to $130,000 (2025) of foreign income from U.S. taxes if they meet residency or physical presence tests.

How do I claim Foreign Tax Credits (Form 1116)?

Form 1116 gives you a credit for taxes paid abroad, reducing or eliminating U.S. tax on the same income - we prepare it to ensure no double taxation.

Do I need to file FBAR or FATCA (Form 8938)?

1) FBAR (FinCEN Form 114)
You must file an FBAR if the combined maximum value of all your foreign financial accounts exceeded $10,000 at any point during the year.
This includes bank accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, foreign pension accounts, and certain online wallets held outside the U.S.
The $10,000 threshold is total across all accounts, not per account.
Example:
If Account A reached $6,000 in March and Account B reached $5,000 in September → FBAR required.
The IRS looks at each account’s maximum annual value and then adds those maximums together.

2) FATCA - Form 8938 (Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets)
Form 8938 is separate from the FBAR and has much higher thresholds. It is filed together with your tax return (Form 1040).
The filing requirement depends on where you live and your filing status:
If you live outside the U.S. :
Single or Married Filing Separately
Over $200,000 on the last day of the year OR
Over $300,000 at any point during the year
Married Filing Jointly
Over $400,000 on the last day of the year OR
Over $600,000 at any point during the year
If you live inside the U.S. :
Single or Married Filing Separately
Over $50,000 on the last day OR
Over $75,000 at any point
Married Filing Jointly
Over $100,000 on the last day OR
Over $150,000 at any point

What happens if I haven’t filed in years?

You can catch up penalty-free using the IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures. We specialize in these cases and handle everything start to finish.

What’s included in the $395 flat fee?

Full preparation and filing of your U.S. expat return (Form 1040 + Form 2555 + Form 1116 + Schedules B–E), reviewed by a licensed U.S. tax expert. No hidden fees.

How secure is your online portal?

We use bank-level SSL encryption and GDPR-compliant systems to keep your documents and data fully secure.

Can I speak to someone before I start?

Yes - you can schedule a free 15-minute introduction call to discuss your situation and ask questions.
